Blake Nelson, 3 years. SMILE will fund research to develop improved treatments for Blake who has a mitochondrial disorder. His sister Amber also has the condition.

Venture Philanthropy

In addition to its grantmaking program, SMILE will use funds to create a capital base for its investment strategy. SMILE’s long-term goal is to be self-funding, much like well established family foundations. This will eliminate the need to rely on fundraising to continue its important work.

In a first for Australian philanthropy, SMILE will invest a proportion of its corpus in Australian biotechnology companies whose research has the potential to fulfil our vision of alleviating suffering caused by illness or disease. These funds will be managed by one of Australia’s most successful biotech investment experts. Thus SMILE will align its philanthropic and investment strategies. The remaining bulk of SMILE’s capital will be invested in an ethically screened, mixed portfolio.
