A CHARITY helped a Doonside family (pictured) meet one of the most challenging times of their lives. Three-year-old Mitchell Gorman who suffers from combined immunodeficiency recently received a $1000 grant from SMILE Foundation. He has already undergone a bone marrow transplant and a heart operation, which caused him to have a stroke. To assist in his recovery, his mother, Katrina had to move from Brisbane to Sydney to find a hospital for his needs. Ms Gorman's social worker at The Children's Hospital in Westmead put her in touch with the foundation and she applied for a grant to meet her mounting living expenses and to purchase a special pram for Mitchell. "The grant has been a lifesaver," she said. SMILE Foundation provides grants to families in need to help cover medical expenses and other costs of raising a child with a rare disease. Foundation CEO Lyndall Beville said reaching 500 families showed the generosity of its donors.
